Arizona Dust and Common Allergens
The Sonoran Desert environment means Arizona homes face a constant battle with fine dust, pollen from desert plants, and valley fever spores. These particles infiltrate homes through doors, windows, HVAC systems, and on clothing and shoes. Bedding acts as a collection point for these allergens, as you spend approximately eight hours each night pressing your face into your pillow.
Common Arizona allergens include ragweed pollen, Bermuda grass pollen, dust mites, and Coccidioides fungal spores that cause valley fever. For allergy sufferers, maintaining a clean sleeping environment is essential for symptom management.
Recommended Bedding Cleaning Schedule
Based on Arizona conditions, we recommend the following cleaning schedule:
- Pillowcases: Every three to four days
- Sheets: Weekly
- Duvet covers: Every two weeks
- Comforters and quilts: Monthly
- Pillows: Every three months
- Mattress pad: Monthly
During peak allergy seasons (March through May and August through October), increase frequency by 50 percent. If someone in your household suffers from asthma or severe allergies, wash pillowcases every other day.
Washing Bedding Properly
Wash all bedding in hot water (at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit) to kill dust mites effectively. Cold water does not eliminate these microscopic creatures. Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergent to avoid adding chemical irritants. Dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes to ensure complete dust mite elimination.
For pillows, wash two at a time to keep the machine balanced. Add an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue. Fluff pillows in the dryer with clean tennis balls to restore loft.
Additional Allergy Reduction Tips
Beyond regular washing, use allergen-proof encasements on all pillows and mattresses. These tightly woven covers prevent dust mites and their waste products from penetrating to the sleeping surface. Replace pillows entirely every 18 to 24 months, as they accumulate allergens that washing alone cannot fully remove. Our bedding service includes allergen-conscious processing with hot water wash and high-heat drying as standard.
